review 1: Perfect to read if you're in the mood for something sad, nostalgic, and beautiful. Or if you've ever been to the Netherlands. These stories are at the same time an elegy for youth and an ode to the Dutch landscape. The writing is very atmospheric and evocative - no wonder that the author is considered one of the Netherlands' best prose stylists. The Little Titans and the Little Poet are my favorite of the stories. I think this book should be read when it is cold and lonely outside.
review 2: This collection started out so strong with me and then kind of crashed and burned from the middle to the end. I don't know if it's just another case of the things that get lost in translation or if Nescio just isn't my kind of writer but I was really surprised by how painfu
... morel it was to get through. At first the stories' simple use of language captured me but then it turned repetitive. I might revisit this after going to Amsterdam to see if I'll find it more charming, but as it is I can't say I'm eager to try again. less
