review 1: The book, “Butterflies and Moths” by Nic Bishop, takes a close look at the beauty of these amazing creatures. Readers can see the butterflies up close as the fantastic photographs show the insects magnified several times their actual size. I would pair this non-fiction book with Patricia Polacco’s book, “The Butterfly”. In this story, a young girl surprisingly sees a beautiful butterfly in her garden in war-torn France during the Nazi occupation. Readers will know from the non-fiction book that butterflies can live everywhere there are plants, from high mountains to dry deserts. So it is possible for them to even live in war-torn parts of the world. According to “Butterflies and Moths”, butterflies transform from ugly little caterpillars into be... moreautiful winged insects. The caterpillars have small hairs on their bodies that help warn it about enemies. Butterflies can blend in perfectly into the environment to confuse predators. In Patricia Polacco’s story, the girl tries to stay safe from her enemies too. The delicate butterfly represents the innocent nature of the little girl who is also vulnerable to danger every day. Both the fiction and non-fiction books will be enjoyed by readers of many different age levels. A teacher could use these books as an introduction to ease into the history about World War II and the Nazis.
review 2: What? Caterpillars do not only turn into butterflies, but some caterpillars turn into moths. Butterflies and moths have tiny scales on their wings. This characteristic provides them with the ability to escape from spider webs. Butterflies also have thousands of light sensors that help them see shapes, colors of leaves, and other butterflies. Butterflies use their antennae on top of their head for touching and smelling. So What? Students will engage with the magnificent photographs and gain a wealth of knowledge about butterflies and moths. For the struggling reader, these photographs will encourage the student to read the text for a well-developed understanding about butterflies. Now What? For a class project I will display a butterfly kit where students will be able to watch the life cycle of a butterfly beginning with the caterpillar. less
