review 1: I found this intermittently fascinating, but ultimately kind of slog. Of course, a worm's eye view of a season in the NFL is an interesting premise, something that most people will never brush up against, and Dawidoff is a reasonably good writer. You get a good sense of the relentless pressure that these coaches and players are under, the incredible complication of what they're trying to do, and the strong (and often damaged) personalities of the people involved. For me, though, there was just too much football, really long descriptions of plays and groups of plays that went right over my head and which I'd find myself skimming, page after page, and then wake up in the middle of something interesting, then right back into the weeds. For someone who's played, though, or... more for an extreme fan, this would be awesome. I might buy it for my son.
review 2: This is a wonderfully written book about the inner depths of football, the emotion of the sport and the delicate balance resultant from testing human beings' physical and psychological limits. Nick is a great storyteller and you can immerse yourself in a full season of a very popular sports team, living all the drama, feeling all the laughs, drinking all the tears, of what goes on inside that closed group. Being a fan of football, of its technical aspects, of its elegance and esthetic beauty, I felt thrilled to learn so much more about what shines before and after the cameras are recording. Highly recommended for any football fan but is also a very nice read for anyone with an interest in human emotions, leadership or philosophy. less

A behind the walls view of an NFL team. The hope and despair of the season. Those who shoulder it.

Interesting read. It gives you a good look at the life of an NFL coach. It is a meat grinder.

The best book on football that I have read in many years.
