review 1: In this installment of the “Bad Kitty” series, Kitty plays a secondary role to Nick Bruel, the author/illustrator of the series. He takes over and first shows young readers how he draws Kitty. He then weaves in the elements of story writing (plot, setting, protagonist, conflict, etc.) as he sets out to create a story about Kitty being too fat. He incorporates many of the familiar minor characters and adds some new offbeat ones as well. “Uncle Murray’s Fun Facts” pages add definitions and clarify terms. Bruel’s wry humor and black and white artwork are a perfect match. Who knew a writing manual could be this engaging and funny? Back matter includes a quasi-copyright dialogue, an appendix and a turnip recipe. Don’t ask…read the book.
review 2: A... more funny writing how-to book complete with kid-friendly definitions/examples of terms ranging from plot to theme and everything in between.Great for classroom use, especially in grades 3-5.There's a section poking fun at how this topic has been done before (notably in a Looney Tunes sketch), but the book reads fine without it and the reference is lost on today's kids.Funny and useful, this is a great go-to book on this subject. less
