review 1: Eh. I liked both leads. I liked the story. I liked everything about it. I just wish there had more plot, because I think Cornick drug out the problems between the two leads more than she needed because there was nothing else. It became overdrawn and somewhat frustrating. Garrick goes from noble and honorable to stubborn and unreasonable. Merryn is not understanding and sympathic, but shrill and unreasonable at times. There's a scene at the end that restores them both to the previous sympathies, but I think a better author could have had the necessary conversation in the middle of the book and had some sort of story to draw out of the rest of the book. I still enjoyed it, but I was left unsatisfied in the end.
review 2: One of those stories where the main charac... moreters starting out hating each other. Usually I get tired of this plot scenario REAL FAST, but Ms Cornick has written such a good novel and the flow of the story is so very good, that I was carried along without the usual irritation over the on-going fight. One of those historicals that is so romantic and really lots of good sizzle. Ended up loving it, don't you know? less
