review 1: Read her other books first because The Lady and the Laird is a disappointment in comparison. Lucy and Robert are each annoyingly selfish and egocentric. The premise for Lucy's original deception makes her seem short-sighted. Instead of donating her entire quarterly allowance to the orphanage, why not give 50% or 75%? Giving 100% "forces" her into writing the letters that end Robert's betrothal. And Robert's grief "forces" him to abandon the people on Golden Isle for 10 years. Not 1, not 5, but 10. Yet, all the villagers praise his leadership and caring. Nicola Cornick is a talented author so I'm going to give book 2 in the series (about Mairi & Jack?) a chance when it's available.
review 2: Found this at the library and thought I would give it a try. There's a lo
... moret to like about this book. Both Lucy and Robert have obstacles to overcome, and it's sweet to see them get their HEA. Cornick does a nice job of helping us see how Lucy is more than the passive and perfect lady that she's desperately trying to be. Robert isn't as vivid, but he's a solid hero who sees Lucy as she really is....and who must really love her because she does some incredibly bone-headed, annoying stuff.So...3 stars. less
