review 1: Hard to rate. I give it a 5 for quality of writing and wit, a 3 for how dark it is. Perfectly captures mindset of someone who's using achievement to outrun the terror of death. But that is a hard space for the reader to inhabit without the promise of some meaning found in life by the last page. The narrator seems more hopeful at the end, but the last section is written in a stream-of-consciousness, time-shifting style that didn't make it entirely clear whether the positive changes in her family were just her fantasy. I would have liked to know more about what new beliefs replaced the depressive ones she spun out so convincingly for most of the book.
review 2: I had no idea what this book was about or really what to expect. I picked it up at the drugstore the ot
... moreher day and figured it would be a light read that probably had metaphor or swimming or a pool. Much to my surprise it was so much more. It was dark with some humor and sadness and pride. It was written in a strange kind of eerie style that just kept reeling me in. I couldn't get enough. This book showed up at the right time for me as the Olympics came to a close I and I was able to feed some of the competitive aspects withdrawal symptoms with this book.I can't pinpoint what makes this book so wonderful but I myself am so glad to have stumbled upon it! less
