review 1: I couldn't help but empathise with Philomena, and the theme is swimming is cleverly followed throughout. I found the end harder to read, but I understood why so stayed with it. This book carried me along, sometimes comfortably doing breaststroke, sometimes battering me and sweeping along out of control. At the end, I lifted my head out of the water and realised that, turbulent or not, I'd had a really good swim.
review 2: I read this book a year or two ago and just re-read it recently to try and break myself out of my post-Olympic depression. (Yes, I harbor an addiction to the Games often finding myself up at 5am watching canoe slalom or ping pong... er... table tennis). Anyway, this book is a fantastic story of a "damaged" champion. I found it hilarious
... moreand heart-breaking. The writing is incredibly innovative and thoughtful. Loved loved loved it! less

Didn't like any of the characters, didn't care what happened to any of them.
