review 1: A cute, cozy-type, light romantic story. A beginner Francofile's joy.If one were to "author" a computer-generated bestseller romance story, he'd upload these --Ingredients:*Paris*Eiffel Tower*Moulin Rouge*Notre Dame*The Tuileries*French cuisine*Vin et champagne*The Louvre - name dropping Mona Lisa!*Rue Bonaparte*Beautiful thirty-something guy and gal*E-z French terms*Bistros*Chansons - even mention Brigitte Bardot!*Betrayal & a screwball romance*wrap it up with an intriguing, eye-catching cover picture of the backside of a young lady in red, arms out to her sides like wings, one leg off the ground as if in a take off position, and point her toward France's (if not the world's) best known landmark... then oh là là! and voilá! you'd have "The #1 International Bestsell... moreer," The Ingredients of Love! This book made me feel as if I were watching a relaxing, comfortable, friendly made-for-TV movie with a PG rating. A Cary Grant / Serendipity. I honestly prefer those to the HBO and big screen R-rated sex, violence, nudity and cursing that's shoved down the public's throats these days. Superficial yes, but after just reading Crime and Punishment and half of The Old Curiosity Shop I wasn't in the mood for more darkness. While reading I was thinking this is like a commercial jingle. Or perhaps like the formula pop tunes Michael Jackson used to release that had nothing to say, but that wasn't his goal anyway. His goal was to hit #1 more times than Elvis or The Beatles. We knew MJ was no Bob Dylan, but we sang and danced and enjoyed the music. That's the effect this little old fashioned story had on me. It didn't ruin my enjoyment even knowing that this was pop formula, light-weight, hit oriented, travel brochure, one hit wonder pablum because I'd had my fill for now of the dark, Beethoven-type music from Dostoevsky and Dickens and didn't want a Mario Puzo's saga in book or movie form.Sometimes when I'm in need of a gentler read I go to the YA/Young Adult section of my public library. This particular book wasn't shelved as such, but it easily could be. I wouldn't recommend a steady diet of these non-lit reads, but for a little R&R I would recommend The Ingredients of Love. It's a "goodread."P.S. I'm left with these questions: 1) It seems Europeans enjoyed this book more than English-speaking readers. Why is that?2) Is there a such thing as a computer generated novel? Or,3) Is Nicolas Barreau the pseudonym of Ms. Daniela Thiele? and if so, is this book not rather like Diego Velasquez's painting, "Las Meninas" where he paints into the painting -- himself painting!? 4) Why no mention of the Arc de Triomphe? :)

Cute and utterly predictable - sometimes that's just what the doctor ordered.
