review 1: After reading "Fledgling" I was interested to see how the story of the follow up book "Avian" would develop. I felt that the writing style of the first book was rather juvenile and under developed but I liked the premise and felt that the story itself was sound, interesting and had scope. I have to say that I was not disappointing. Again, this is definitely a book written for a younger audience, pre-teen to young adult, but thoroughly enjoyable none the less. As the main character has grown older so has the authors use of language and prose and the emotions conveyed are also a lot more mature. I still feel that some themes are under explored like the connection between the main character and his dragon. It was already suggested that it has been decades since any dragon has... more chosen it's rider, so it's obviously a big deal but not very much is said about it. Then a few months later, another dragon chooses it's own rider as well, and still there's not much awe involved. What is it about these two characters that won the affections of two wild and drastically savage creatures? One a wild drake, the other a king drake. We don't know because no one seems interested in finding out even though it's something that hasn't happened in years. Anyway, that's my main gripe. Other than that the book was a good read and I'd recommend it to other fantasy lovers as an easily digested book and any young adults or tweens. I look forward to reading the third book.
review 2: I received Avian in return for an honest review as part of the tour hosted by Chapter by Chapter. Avian takes place right after the first book has ended. Jae and Felix are headed home for a three week break before they start their first year as an Avian. Against Felix’s request Jae heads home unknown what he will find but he wants to see Katty, and he feels he needs to go home. When he arrives he finds his family home abandoned with a letter from his half-brother telling him the house is his. He heads to Katty only to find her flirting with a young man working at the forge and he’s hurt and when she finds him he pushes her away. However his stay at home is quick because he receives word that Beckah needs him so he takes off to where they are staying.Jae and Mavrik are greeted by the big black king Drake Icarus who has bonded with Beckah and he’s intent on getting his revenge after last time. Out of the darkness arrives Beckha who calms Icarus so that she can greet her friend Jae. She tells him about how the dragon has been protecting there house, about her mother being ill with the baby on the way and they retire to the house. Her father and his former instructor greets them sending her off to bed and Jae soon after. It’s while staying with Beckah that everything changes for Jae he saves a life risking his and transforming himself into an adult version of himself. Now all he has to do is survive his avian training to become a real dragon rider which is going to push him to the limits forcing him to risk it all.I don’t typically connect as well with male character but I love Jae he’s dealing with a lot trying to survive the training as a dragon rider as well as his own personal demons. I think he’s paired really with Felix as his protector in the first book and friend. Now that Jae isn’t so small anymore he can blossom into a bad-ass character. Felix is a good guy who doesn’t care that Jae is a half breed and treats him like a equal which I really liked. They work well together and even though Jae kept his secrets to protect Felix their friendship just continued to stay strong. I think my favorite character thought would be Brekah what can I say a girl with a dragon after my own heart. Plus she doesn’t see Jae as a half breed. I can’t wait to see what happens with the in the next book.I originally started the Fledgling series because of my hubby but we both have become quick fans of the series. He actually read Avian before I was able to the moment I sent it to my kindle it went to his too and he jumped at the chance. Avian is the second book in the series that tells the story of Jae a half human and half elf who’s chosen by a wild dragon and thrust into the world his kind of denied. Avian is a captivating story right from the start loaded with action, adventure, dragons, secrets, romance, mystery and even killer plants. The author has taken the dragon concept added her own unique spin to create an amazing story that was hard to put down. It’s one of those books I had a hard time putting down I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen and it kept me guessing. I honestly loved everything about the book it’s beautifully written pulling at your heart strings I even had some tears at the end. The Fledgling series is by far my favorite dragon series out there it’s one that I can see myself reading over and over. I can’t wait to read the next one to see what happens with the characters. less

Good dragons - I would consider going through the workouts described if I could have a dragon.
