review 1: Yes, it is about the Iago from Shakespeare's play "Othello". Iago is the first person narrator, and it's the story of his life. How he went from self-imposed Venetian outsider to Othello's confidante to obsessively jealous ... Galland creates an interesting back story for one of literature's most iconic villains. Who knew he fancied himself a man of integrity? a man with a character above reproach? He falls hard for Emilia and loves her unconditionally. He gains Othello's friendship by helping him navigate the ins and outs of Venetian high society. But when Othello cuts him out of the loop of his courtship with Desdemona, he takes it as a personal slight/insult. When he's passed over for the lieutenantship, he spirals out of control and is consumed by plots to get back at ... moreCassio. Galland created an interesting web of lies and deceit and the disintegration of Iago's character. Quite compelling.
review 2: Loved this book. An Othello fan myself, Iago has always intrigued more than most characters written by Shakespeare. Nicole Galland gives life to Iago that I didn't think possible. She explores his motivations and the events that lead to why he behaves and acts the way he does. I found myself sympathizing with the green-eyed monster. This was a wonderfully tragic story... perfectly imagined and written in a way that I find myself believing that Shakespeare wrote it himself. Any Othello and/or Shakespeare fan will find this a delight. less
