review 1: Don't get me wrong, I love Nikki Giovanni. I love the connections she encourages us to make, the warmth she brings to her work, the questions she asks and the worlds she asks us to imagine. But this book wasn't my favorite. While there are a few selections I really liked ("Podcast for Bicycles", "And Everyone Will Answer", "Allowables") I mostly just felt like I was reading Giovanni's personal thoughts and memories, with line breaks thrown in for good measure. It wasn't even confessional; it was more conversational. And perhaps that's the heart of it: when I finished this book I thought my time would have been much better spent taking Nikki Giovanni out for a drink and listening to her spin than reading this book of poems. It just didn't read like anything special t... moreo me.
review 2: This book is a refreshing hybrid of short stories and poems with a lighthearted, warm feel. I had the pleasure of listening to Nikki Giovanni read a few pieces from this at Virginia Tech's library cafe a few weeks ago, and having the memories of her wonderful personality and voice definitely added to my reading experience. Chasing Utopia will remind you of the connections you have with people you love as it captures the beauty of everyday interactions and comforts. less

Very good and a bit strange. A mix of poetry and prose.
