review 1: There is a trend in YA literature for the female "hero" of the story to become completely obsessed with the love interest, to the point where nothing else matters but whether the guy likes her. In this way I have seen female characters start off as strong and independent, only to go from being focused on the danger to being focused on her love life. This book, which I thought had an interesting premise, is one of the worst offenders of this trend that I have read in a while. Now I don't have a problem with a romance being included in a story like this, but when it ends up becoming the be all and end all of the female lead's existence, that is where I get annoyed. Lailah started off as someone who could take care of herself, but then devolved into a damsel in distress who w... moreas more worried that Gabriel might like Hanora than she was about the Pureblood vampires hunting her. And the other female characters were also completely preoccupied with getting the guys attention, or, or course, their wardrobes. However, the thing that most disturbed me with this book was how every single man seem to think that they were welcome to touch Lailah, sometimes very intimately, without an express invitation. And she never would say anything about it. I think that this sends the message that women hear too often in this society--that their bodies are free to be touched and ogled by any man who thinks they are attractive. So many time Lailah should have laid these guys out and yet she basically just let them get one with it. This bothered me a great deal.
review 2: What I have to say is simple. This book was fantastic. I read it in about five hours. I decided to go to Barnes and Noble, say this book and its covered which already intrigued me. We I opened the cover to read the summary/except/whatever you may call it, it pulled me in. I read it all the way through, and I must say again, it was fantastic. I loved it! I understood her angel heritage, but the near ending of Lailah was quite suspenseful. I was terrified that she had really died. As I finished it off, I was so happy for her Pair,Gabriel, but extremely sad for Jonah because of her memory loss and his deep love for her.If by some chance, you, Nikki Kally, read this please know you are an amzing author. Your book was amazing, fantastic, and any other adjectives to that extent of greatness or more so. less
