review 1: Haunting and incredibly good. Dystopic fiction helps put perspective on the complaints and problems we half-heartedly curse in our own lives.Quotes...as if he were lapping up my feelings with his big, rough, psychologist's tongue. p 86"...Life and existence have no value in themselves. We mean nothing; not even those who are needed mean anything. The only thing of any real value is what we produce. Or to put it more accurately: the fact that we do produce something..." 102"It's only new constellations they approve f. People who make a new home and produce new people. You know that Dorrit; you know that everything has to move forward. " p 177
review 2: This novel is set in the future, but not so distant that it doesn't seem real or possible. When women turn
... more 50 and men turn 58, if they're deemed "dispensable" they go live in the Unit where life is quite pleasant if you can accept that fact that you'll be subjected to humane medical research and harvested for organs until you make your "final donation". You're dispensable if you don't have children or in some other way contribute to society though being a parent seems to overrule that part quite a bit.Dorrit moves into the Unit and after an adjustment finds life rather pleasant. In addition to being able to pursue the things she loves, she finds a close group of friends and even begins a relationship and falls in love. Life changes dramatically when she receives some medical news that alters everything as she knows. Suddenly she's faced with a decision - should she try to escape or accept fate? The novel is incredibly well written and makes you think of what a future like this would be like. It's chilling because it's realistic enough to imagine something simliar in the not-too-distant future. Though it started a little slow, it was an excellent read and I was hooked after just a short time. less
