review 1: Mildly entertaining... The author is part of the generation of borderline sociopath narcissists that have popped up everywhere in my life these past few years... Her inability to see what is really going on in her life (how about tackling your obvious addiction issues?) along with her delusions about what and why she is tackling this project of doing one scary thing a year ultimately made this book unreadable. I made it exactly 48% through, and that's only because I was on a long flight and bored to tears.
review 2: This is a great book. I loved it! Yes, I have fear, fear of everything. Even when I conquer one fear, it will still haunt me again and again. The only fear I overcame was public speaking, forced to do it at my job as an adult librarian. Who knew how
... more much public speaking there would be for someone who lists reading as her favorite activity? When Noelle Hancock loses her job as a blog writer she finds Eleanor Roosevelt to inspite her to " Do one thing every day that scares you." Living in New York City she finds lots to do that is scary, ie. first she signs up for trapeze lessons on a roof top in NYC, (luckily she convinces her friends to do it with her!) She and her friends also go sky-diving for the first time, then she learns to pilot a fighter plane that chases another newbie in a dog fight! Then her father's friend suggests climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest point and the world's highest free-standing mountain, which is actually a volcano that is showing signs of renewed activity! Now that is scary! Interspersed in her narrative about her friends, her boyfriend, and her therapist are stories about Eleanor Roosevelt learning to overcome her fears. Mrs. Roosevlt really does some incedible things herself, like flying in a plane so prone to ignite the government feels it is too risky for President Roosevlt to fly in, so they allocate it to her. Another quote I like from Eleanor Roosevelt, " No one ever lives up to the best in themselves all the time, and nearly all of us love people because of their weaknesses rather than because of their strengths." less

I originally picked up this book because I think Eleanor Roosevelt is one of the best role models a woman could have. She is full of wisdom and wit and overcame many obstacles in her life to become a great leader and advocate. The author uses a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt to inspire her to conquer her fears for a year. Freshly laid-off from her job in New York, (where she earned 6 figures)the author decides to take a year off and do something everyday that scares her. The result is a story that could only be accomplished if you had substantial savings, wealthy parents, an incredibly supportive network of friends/spouse, and lived in the NYC--or very near the amenities of a big city. I enjoyed Hancock's writing style, it was very conversational with some snarky bits, but the magnitude of some of her antics were very UN-relatable. It did, however, make for exciting reading! Hancock also sprinkles little stories from Eleanor's life throughout the book, which made it even better. Even though the author is not your average 29 yr old, I enjoyed her adventure because of it.

This was an enjoyable book. The main character is out of work and consumed with various fears to the point where they limit her life experiences. She starts reading about Eleanor Roosevelt and how she dealt with her fears and decides to follow her example by dealing with one fear every day. This leads her to taking trapeze lessons, jumping out of airplanes and much more. Hancock is a good writing and more than once I found myself laughing out loud. I recommend it!

I did not like this book at all! I thought the author was dull.
