My Stubborn Heart was the first book I ever read by Becky Wade. It was the book that introduced me to one of my favorite authors, and also to Peppermint Taffy. Two summers later, I still love peppermint taffy, still consider Kate Donovan a bookshelf friend, and I think about the squirrels in Dallas every time I drive. Seriously.
This is Kate Donovan’s story. She is 31, hopelessly single, and on a three month vacation with her grandmother, to restore Chapel Bluff, family mansion. She’s been praying for a husband since the fourth grade. God is obviously taking his good ol’ time.
This is Matt Jarrau’s story. A man who stopped praying years ago, who, after losing his young wife, and giving up on his superstar hockey career, has settled on restoring old homes in his hometown as a life calling. A hard, bitter man, who shoves to the side everything, and everyone that could possibly make him feel. Including God.
What I loved about this book:
*The vivid descriptions in My Stubborn heart, had me instantly transported to Redbud, Pennsylvania. I heard the gravel crunch under work booted, and UGG clothed feet outside Chapel Bluff. I watched soggy leaves pile against the curb in the street outside Main Street Coffee, from inside the toasty shop. I smelled Gran’s lasagna on the table in Chapel Bluff’s kitchen.
Why I recommend this book:
- Because I loved Matt’s transformation. And, though I’m a girl, and supposed to identify with the heroine, I loved that I recognized myself in many of Matt’s thoughts and feelings.
- Because Kate is the bravest girl around. She lets go of what she wants the most, because she knows it’s the right thing to do. I felt her heartache. And, Kate? This is why we are forever friends.
