review 1: I liked Song of the West because the lead character wasn't completely pigheaded and the eventual intimate scene was brief and handled tastefully. I also enjoy western romances and learning about ranch life etc. Therefore, I was expecting Boundary Lines to be similar. However, this leading lady was more pigheaded and made me want to shake her a few times. Also, this book had more details of their encounters and many more of them.
review 2: This is two of Nora Roberts' very early works put together in one volume. They are each separate stories and not related to one another besides the fact that they both take place in the west on ranches / farms. I will admit I bought the book because the cover looked like a nice winter read and I thought it might be nice to
... moreget into the holiday spirit a little. But don't be fooled these stories have nothing to do with winter. The other part of me loves, loves, loves her novel Montana Sky and I wanted to capture a little of that same feeling again with a different story by Nora Roberts. They come close but I guess nothing replaces the original.Song of the West is a short story (I believe it takes up only 140 pages) and it revolves around Sam(antha) coming to Wyoming to take care of her sister Sabrina who is having a difficult pregnancy. While there she begins to fall in love with the mountains and also the handsome neighbor Jake Tanner. It was an easy / short read that goes through about six months in the story, and part of me wanted it to be expanded more. The other part felt it was a little cheesy. There were some very "caveman"-like qualities to the story which if you read anything later on in the Nora Roberts catalogue you will see that she tone it down a lot later on. But this is early Nora Roberts and you can definitely appreciate her later works by reading her earlier works to see where she started. Boundary Lines was a little better. It was longer (about 230 pages) so it seemed more story ideas were able to be fleshed out. Boundary Lines involves and age old feud between two families the Murdocks and the Barons and how despite everything two people will learn to love each other. It's better than Song of the West in that there's the beginnings of the thrilling conflict that Nora Roberts famously puts in all her novels now. It's on the lighter side, but it's the beginnings. Unlike Song of the West where there was no real conflict outside of the relationship. One of the things that both of the stories did that could have been cut down was all the back and forth between the male and females leads. They would all but shout out loud that they had feelings for the hero one moment and the next moment they would pull away from some blurry reason. I say blurry because the reasons weren't really fleshed out enough for me to think them plausible. Overall these were two quick and easy reads. I could see myself revisiting them at a later date when I want something where I don't need to invest too much time. Maybe my thoughts on them will change with time. I also think it's a nice introduction into Nora Roberts' earlier works. less
