review 1: I plowed through this book waiting for something to grab me, something to happen, some connection to the characters. But nothing ever did. The first character to come along that seemed to have potential, Hume, was never developed and cast aside as the book wore on. The characters overall were poorly developed and used artificial and pompous language. Nina was vaguely interesting but also completely unrealistic in manner and tone. I really wanted to enjoy it but unfortunately never did.
review 2: This was one of the most boring books I have read in a long time. The back of it made me think of The Quarry by Iain Banks or The Big Chill. Instead it took those story lines, getting together old friends for a death as in The Big Chill, or pending death as in the Quarr
... morey, but populated the story with one dimensional characters that were so boring and pretentious, that only an academic or a NYT book reviewer could slog through it. For anyone else, don't bother. less

Quite different from his earlier Africal novels, but still a wonderful sense of character.
