review 1: Norman Rush is one of my favorite writers. Mating, as well as Mortals, were excellent reads. However, Subtle Bodies lacked something. The writing was great, but the story did not interest me much. Too much was left unsaid. I liked the idea of the story, but wanted it fleshed out some, though I'm not sure that's part of the meaning of subtle bodies, you never really get to know someone deeply, that most people are rather surface, subtle. I might be totally off base on that, but it's the only thing that makes sense to me since this book just lacks full development of the characters. If you are a Norman Rush fan, I still think it's worth the read. For others, not so sure.
review 2: Maybe it was my mood when I read it. The reviews were great but I was never engage
... mored. I didn't really like anyone, living or dead, and had a head time caring about their issues. Possible exception: Nina. She at least had some life to her and knew how to be direct with people. I thought there were times when sections of the book was so supposed to be funny (Nina's conversations with her mother?). Were they? Because they fell flat for me. Other parts were more serious but just as uninteresting. Meh. Glad it was short. less
