review 1: What a treat to read these two recently discovered works by Octavia Butler, one of my favorite sci fi authors. They were not as polished as her published work but did show the uniqueness of a Butler work. The first is novella length, while the second is a short story. I enjoyed the novella but it is the short story that has stayed with me. I had just finished The Whole Man by John Bruner and the contrast in how Butler handled the telepathy angle was stark. If you are a Butler fan, these works are definitely worth your time.
review 2: I have to read everything by Butler and this is an recently dug up treasure. Found in stacks of previously unpublished work, the first story, A Necessary Being was fascinating. It begins by placing you in another highly evolve
... mored world and you have to sort out the details yourself, but it becomes clear by the end. Then you wish it would've become a full story for how abruptly it ends. You can easily see the seeds of Butler's fascinations in this story. The second short story was interesting, but sort of a throw away in my opinion. It had links to the Patternmaster series, but unformed and too short to really get into anything. less

Still love (and miss) Octavia Butler. These are great, as expected.

I've never so wished that a book was longer.

3.75. The second story was weaker.
