review 1: I honestly didn't know if I was going to like this book--we had to read a suspenseful novel for a school project, and my librarian had recommended it for me. Now, my librarian is awesome, and has great book taste, but the cover and title made it seem as if it were a cheesy romance novel--it wasn't. Turns out the title has a lot of different meanings, but you won't understand all of them until you get to the end. Very symbolic. As I read I found myself sucked into Gabby and Ingrid's new world. It is a world of mystery, action, and some good old-fashioned forbidden romance on the side. However, if you're looking for a light YA romance novel, turn around and find something else. This gothic novel is centered around two sisters, Gabriella and Ingrid, whose brother, Grayson, has ... moregone missing from the mysterious abbey he was sent ahead to buy for their mother. No one else is concerned by this except the sisters and their mother. However, a series of missing young women is brought to their attention and they immediately begin to investigate the loss of their brother. They find a lot more than what they were looking for.In a world of angels, demons, hellhounds and guardian gargoyles, the two girls discover that something is different about Ingrid and their brother.... And that not everyone can be trusted.(At least that was my interpretation of it!) I read it in about two days, and I can sincerely say I am looking forward to the next book!
review 2: So I knew this book was about gargoyles. Most of the reviews I saw glowingly referenced the inclusion of gargoyles as an original concept on supernatural YA. But in the first chapter, when a main character thinks, "That was the day I became a gargoyle," I must admit, I thought to myself, I don't know if I can do this. But I persisted, gave myself up to the totally surreal and fantastic, and was rewarded by a solid read. I do think the plot was creative (same story as other books, I suppose, but different devices). If you like the idea of the gargoyles at Notre Dame coming alive and flying over Paris to protect humans at the turn of the century (and I do!), then read it. less
