review 1: I enjoyed this story pretty well. I was instantly sucked in by the historical mystery aspect of it. I thought the flashbacks to help reveal the mystery were well done, but I had a difficult time with the love story/triangle of the lawyers. It felt contrived, very forced, and terribly unbelievable. I understand that the author was attempting to create a somewhat mirroring story line across time, but instead of enriching the story it almost killed it for me.
review 2: Really enjoyed this book! In the novel The Things We Cherished, the author goes back and forth in time from the present day all the way back to 1902 in Germany. One of the plot lines involves the relationship between two attorneys, Charlotte Gold and Jack Warrington, who end up working together on
... more a case involving Roger Dykmans, a wealthy financier, accused of WWII war crimes in Germany. Jack is the estranged brother of Brian Warrington, the man Charlotte was deeply in love with several years before, and she has never fully recovered from Brian breaking up with her to marry another woman. While Charlotte and Jack race against time trying to find answers to Roger Dykman's alleged crimes, she has surprising revelations about Jack. The other plot line accomplished through vignettes the author includes going back in time involves the stories of people in the past who have been owners of a very special clock created in 1902 by a clockmaker both as a gift to his wife and as a masterpiece to try to establish himself as a clockmaker. Those stories come full circle around to Roger Dykmans who is accused of betraying his brother Hans leading to his arrest and death and also the death of many Jews Hans was trying to save in Germany. The stories of Roger's past include the great and only love of Roger's life which ends in tragedy. The story touches on the tragedies inflicted on the Jews but this is not the focus on the book. The author has done a superb job on weaving the past with the present in this book adding to the reading enjoyment. less
