review 1: I really enjoyed this. As a parenting book somehow it managed to inspire a few thoughts whilst also giving confidence. Much of the advice is quite common sense based, and the title should possibly be 'children with parents who set boundaries don't throw food'. I really liked the chapters about getting children to eat a variety of food and also 'les grand yeux' which I will be trying to use on my toddler! The French attitude to breastfeeding still baffles me though as does sending your 4/5 year old off for a week on a school trip! Some of the chapters meander slightly meanlessly in to her own life which spoilt the flow of this otherwise quick read hence the dropped star.
review 2: Light-hearted look at parenting styles of the French and Anglophones. Any parent I
... more know can be simultaneously proud and mortified and I'm sure that goes for French parents too. I have discovered that I'm surprisingly French in my parenting having naturally adopted 'la pause' and believing that for my children instilling 'education' and a good level of 'autonomie' they will become independent thinkers. I think I may need to work on the 'cadre' a bit more but I'm probably not far off. I definitely need to work on my 2.5 year old son's diet as he seems to exist on 'white' food. Whilst 'escargots' will certainly never be on the menu at Chez Magill his dietary repertoire needs to be broadened! less
