review 1: I wanted to like this book, being as it was recommended by Chinaberry, which usually doesn't steer me wrong. The author's research sounded fascinating, but too little time was spent in fleshing out the more interesting characters. The most disappointing aspect for me was that wholly predictable way that liberated woman of the turn of the century was the evil heartless bitch in the end. That may be unfair, but nonetheless, I felt it did a disservice to the story- one which was supposed to portray the choices women make as more nuanced than they were treated in this novel.
review 2: I don't know if I can put into words how much I loved this book. I felt like I grew to know every one of the characters, and I found myself thinking about the book even when I wasn'... moret reading it. I could not wait to find out what happened next in each of the character's lives. I found I liked each person in the book for something, even if the person was completely horrible. I definitely recommend this book. less
