review 1: Hard to say exactly why this doesn't work. Something to do with the author's inability to tell a story. It feels as though the information is given out as in a list, one fact after another, in a way impossible to connect with. Some interesting info on non-western intellectuals and political thought in Asia and the Middle East in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but none of it feels deep or revealing.
