This past Saturday, February 25, The Orange High School men’s varsity basketball team hosted the 3rd round of state playoffs.
The boys started the game off strong, with a lead over Triton High School. There was a score within the first minute of the game.
In the beginning of the second quarter, senior Connor Crabtree injured his ankle. With the help of coaches, Crabtree was able to walk off the court, with the whole student section cheering for him.
Although, Crabtree was taken out of the game due to his injury, the game still proceeded. Logan Vosburg, Mitchell Portman, Elijah Haithcock, and Morgan Paschall kept bringing in the points. By halftime the score was 34 to 14.
At many times the crowd would get excited about a good move a player had made, however; there were mostly bad feelings toward the referees, who had made many bad calls.
Many times the student section would get so excited that it forced Principal Eric Yarborough, and Assistant Principal Judith Brantley to step in and calm everyone down, and keep the crowd off of the court.
The Orange Panthers were in the lead the whole game. Kelly Long, one of the spectators, said, “The boys went out and gave it their all and they dominated the court even with the other team being really rough.”
Orange is a very athletic school, but the athletic program would be nothing if the students weren’t motivated. Student athlete Morgan Paschall says “The thought of success motivates me.”
The mighty Panthers won the game with a score of 67 to 47, and as the players shook hands after the final buzzer the student section all joined in and sang “Goodbye” by Kristinia DeBarge. An Orange High victory tradition that sees the opposing team off with a warm OHS goodbye.
Morgan Paschall says, “This game was a rough one, but we pulled through it and we sent Triton home, so we could go on to the next round, and become state champions. Everyone has worked so hard to get here and this is just the beginning!”
