review 1: I enjoyed this book, liked the writing style, and had fun mentally walking through the world created by the author. However, the title of the book is "The Windup Girl". I expected this windup girl to be featured more in the story, but large chunks of it went by without her presence. And at the end of the book, I felt as if nothing was really resolved. Many of the main characters met their demise, and it would have been nice if the windup girl had at least gotten to achieve her one dream, but alas...
review 2: The Windup Girl was... a book I really wanted to like, and eventually I did. It took well over 100 pages, which is generally not something the author can get away with. I only lasted that long because I quite liked much of Pump Six and other stories a... morend this book came highly regarded.But really - was the whole second chapter necessary? The broken spindle in the factory, blahblahblah. I point this out as an example of the boggy plot. It simply took too long to get going.A lot of reviewers pilloried the ending but I liked it. There was hope, but only just, and that's the author's point. We have been messing up the biosphere for so long and so deeply, that there really is little hope of anything BUT a descent into barbarism. Emiko was that tiny bit of non-barbarism (being the survivor of much of it...).Worth a read. I only wish for a stronger plotted story. And a bit more hope at the end. Call me a romantic, fine ;P less
