review 1: The profiler was unsatisfying. Television set my expectations higher than reality would provide. Cases were not overturned. The profiler was not called in to help solve the case, rather, she was used to give solace to families of victims. Her story and how she became a profiler was interesting. Her detailing how she got her children to help her with crime reenactment was interesting and disturbing. Particularly one case involving auto erotic asphyxiation. Her description of suicide by hanging was also disturbing. But, that's the way real life cases are, I suppose. It gave me perspective when watching all the procedural shows available on Television, these days. Crimes are solved in 40 minutes. This book showed real life as it is. The audiobook was almost 10 hours and no cri... moremes were solved. She interestingly indicated that detectives and prosecutors are not bound to solve and prosecute crimes. They only bring cases they can win to trial, for political reasons. Those whose records might be tarnished by losses in the courtroom, whose career advancement in politics might be adversely affected, don't allow cases that might be lost to go to trial. At least that is what the author says. I don't doubt it is true. It is bothersome that criminals who can commit crimes and avoid incrimination enough to leave even a sliver of doubt may never even get to trial. Of course, our legal system is set up to protect people from false accusation AND people's lives can be ruined over simple accusations, as the press and the public can easily convict the accused in the arena of public opinion, so our legal system tends to leave more perpetrators on the streets than the general public might be aware. It is sobering, unsatisfying and makes one uncomfortable. BUT, does the legal system need reform that the author advocates? I'm not sure.
review 2: Well part one was slow, boring, and not believable at times, however after getting through that I realised, like any book, the setting of the scene, characters and plot, is often, at times, slow, boring and not believable. I feel the author spends waaay to much time on her personal background which is not that interesting. Finally reaching the crimes, this book picked up and became a pretty okay book, so I recommend just reading the second half. This book showed the 'failure' of our legal and justice system - that even if you have clear evidence in front of you, law enforcers are blind to put two and two together, however I also feel Brown stereotypes the police officers as lazy and ignorant and frankly portrays them in a negative light. I felt Pat was slightly narcissistic and self-absorbed when I personally don't think she really had the credibility and experience to just start up as a criminal profiler and interview victims. I found that quite inconsiderate and rude of her. I liked these cases and the way Pat Brown set them out with a summary at the beginning of the chapter that helped me keep track of each case, though it was sad, however realistic, that no case was ever officially solved. To think that so many serial and other killers are out there getting away with murder time and time again, makes me sad and angry - I hope one day, I too, will be a criminal profiler and can contribute to change this, like how Pat Brown tries to make our world a more safer and crime-free world free from these murderous psychopaths. This book is good if you are into in-your-face descriptions of actual crimes from the point of view of a an ordinary mother who became a criminal profiler because she wouldn't give up on finding a murdered woman's killer. However it is to note that this book is an autobiography and does not 'get in the minds' of serial killers and psychopaths that one would suppose this book is about - I was disappointed because of that. Throughout the book it screamed to me that Pat was saying "I'm right I'm right" and therefore everyone else, especially the police and victims, are wrong and ignorant. less
