review 1: Only the Truth is definitely a quick read. The characters are interesting. The story is told from the point of view of Billy Ray Hutchins -- an uneducated black man with an amazingly kind heart. The reader is immediately taken in by Billy Ray's goodness. The plot moves along a bit too quickly for my taste and the resolution if somewhat abrupt. In spite of these "weaknesses", however, I still liked the book. It's refreshing to read about a young man who, in spite of his impoverished lifestyle is able to find happiness in love.
review 2: I really liked this book a lot. If I could give it 4 1/2 stars, I would do that. It centers around a man, Billy Ray Hutchins, who is determined to find out the truth about the girl he took in no matter what that truth act
... moreually entails. She just showed up one day, asked if she could go home with him, and he obliged. They live together happily for a couple of years until an old man moves in across the road from them. The girl suddenly becomes silent and sad and before too long, the old man is burned to death in a fire while Billy Ray had gone out briefly. Before long, the girl is arrested for the old man's murder. Billy Ray learns soon just how much the girl has lied to him but a large part of him still loves her. Eventually, he travels to her her home town to get to the bottom of the mystery. I love the small town character and dogged determination of Billy Ray. This book was a definite page turner. I read it all during the course of one day and would happily recommend it to a friend. less
