review 1: I was looking forward to this novel, as I enjoyed The Cradle very much. This Bright River is a really well-written book, and has a suspenseful, non-chronological plot that kept me guessing until the end. It's also very insightful about human nature, rage, privilege, domestic abuse, and losing your sense of self. My only criticism is that it had an uneven quality in the last few chapters, partly because the main character made an intuitive leap that seems unlikely, despite his reputed intelligence where puzzles are concerned. However, I liked the book immensely, and I will definitely be reading his next novel.
review 2: 4.5! I loved this so much. It's part thriller, part mystery, part weird character study, part awesome. Think Tana French meets Jeffrey Eugenides
... more meets midwestern version of David Guterson, and maybe you'll get an idea? What I loved most about reading this is I was continually surprised-- surprised by the characters, surprised by the plot (when it got violent and crazy sort of like Dragon Tattoo towards the end I was shocked), surprised by my reaction...The writing is good and the story is compelling, and yeah. You should read this. less

I didn't like this book. I didn't like the characters. I didn't like the story. What was the point.

Very readable and compelling. A bit too rambling in a few places, but I really enjoyed it.
