review 1: Overall, I liked it. There were a few things that got under my skin in this one though. I would recommend that you read a sample before reading this one. I am reading the 2nd book at this time & did start immediately after this book, so it was pretty good. I'd love to have given it 5 stars, but I just could not. It was kind of like when you watch a scary movie & are yelling at the characters, "NO! Don't do THAT! That's a BAD idea!"The Good 1. Fast paced, I was able to get right into the story. 2. Strong female lead character- a good thing. 3. Aliens- gotta love 'em!4. Scary The Bad 1. A woman who rides her bike to & from work & stated that is her only form of exercise is able to ride her bike 30 miles a day, while loaded down with a ton of supplies. Nope. I can buy into a ... morelot of stuff in fiction, but this was way past believable & lost a star on the review. If she *knows* that she is going to be able to find shelter when she needs it, why does she need to be bogged down w/all the stuff she brings? Cans of food are heavier than dried rations, nuts, jerky, berries & even then, if she is planning on finding uninhabited homes to stay in, isn't it more likely that people will have left plenty of nonperishable food behind? Sorry, just no... 2. She stays in her apartment complex after finding horrible things are in the building. And she continues to climb to her 17th floor apartment daily...even after an injury? Dragging supplies with her that does not need at this point? She hears terrifying things through her walls & still, she does not leave NOW. 3. She is a journalist & she is not documenting her experience!!!!! She's not writing, recording by voice, camera, or taking any pictures!!! That takes another star away. 4. **Spoiler ahead** do not read the next one if you haven't read the book!****************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************Why, if the person who calls her on the phone, is in a group of people, is he the only one who talks to her??? I would not trust anyone who told me that they are part of a group & then is the only person I talk to. I would avoid that 'group' at all costs- regardless of what he said.
review 2: I liked the way the story introduced the problem in the first few pages I began reading. By doing that, I was really interested in what I was about to read. The book is about a girl, named Emily, who is a reporter/writer. She lives in New York, and while at a cafe, she witnesses a mysterious red rain. The red rain turns out to cause death within minutes of contact. When she feels that she really is the only person left on Earth, she receives a phone call from a guy named Jacob, who is part of a research group that works at a remote climate-monitoring station in the Stockton Islands. He said that the northern parts of the world do not receive the deadly rain, and so he tells Emily that it is imperative to get there as soon as she can. She gathers supplies and immediately gets on her bike to travel north. Upon her travel up north, she meets a dog, named Thor, who saves her from an alien creature. The book ends with Emily and her new friend, Thor, traveling the route toward Jacob’s camp. One thing I liked about the book was that author is very descriptive with every scene. One thing I disliked was the way Emily got away with everything. I felt that she got lucky throughout the book way too many times. I also felt that everything was given to Emily. I think the author could’ve made her a little more heroic than having her get lucky and getting away with every obstacle she faced. But overall, I enjoyed reading the book, there were a lot of suspenseful moments but there were long and boring ones as well. I would recommend the book if you’re into the science fiction genre and also if you enjoy apocalyptic themed books. less
