review 1: The world is still waiting for a truly great biography of Edgar Allan Poe. That said, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Paul Collins' biography to students and other interested readers. It's concise, insightful, and well written - and, perhaps most importantly, it avoids the problems of other Poe biographies, such as excessive bias for/against Poe and numerous factual errors. I can't say that I learned much about Poe that I didn't already know, or that I wouldn't have loved more of everything (details, analysis, and mining of primary sources), but I enjoyed the book. It would be ideal for those seeking an introduction to the author and the importance of his work.
review 2: A brief biography of Poe by historian Collins in which Collins clearly has specific insigh
... morets about Poe that he wants to get across. Collins is an assiduous researcher and he has found newspaper clippings and other info that add to what is known about Poe. And as someone who wasn't really familiar with Poe's life, this was a concise account of a important, but very sad, life. I'm not sure if a real Poe expert would need to read this, but anyone with some interest in the man could do worse in using this well-written book as a starting point. less
