review 1: I HATED this book. It went on and on and ON, the main character runs around (I think so the author could wow us with his descriptions of other places besides Berlin) and makes a lot of stupid choices like (SPOILER ALERT!) leaving his children unattended when he KNOWS there's a psychotic child-killer on the loose because it's the case he's been WORKING ON (but it's okay because the PCK gets a second chance at the kids so it's all good, the plot will have somewhere to go, yaaaay). Or when he goes in ALONE to rescue his kids from said PCK when earlier in the book he'd warned the previous detective working the case about not following up a lead that said to meet somewhere alone but (again SA!!) that detective went anyway and gets killed right before our main character can ge... moret there in time to save him…of course, how annoyingly convenient. I completely lost my patience about 60 pages from an excruciatingly predictable ending I could barely finish and have absolutely NO desire to put myself through the torture of reading another book from this series evaaaaar agaaaain.
review 2: Fascinating look at Germany between the wars, but HighBridge does the author a real disservice with a narrator who mispronounces endless German place names. His voice captures the mood, but the botching of the German is extraordinarily irritating. Narrator of the first book in the series, Christian Contreras, was superb. If there's a third in the series, I won't listen unless they use a narrator who knows his stuff. less
