review 1: The town of Enon is as much a character in this book as Charlie, the narrator. Watching someone's unhealthy choices of coping mechanisms while grieving the death of a child is like coming upon the scene of an accident, knowing there's going to be traffic from everyone slowing to stare and observe -- like the accident wasn't bad enough in damages/injuries, but now someone could be late. The descriptions of the clock and orrery were the best. Felt like a rushed ending in comparison to the slow pace of the rest of the book.

... moreok down. It was too bizarre. One of my favorite characters, Mrs. Hale, the quintessential flinty New Englander, seemed to speak for me when she demands that the father, get over his maudlin grief. I would have preferred re-reading Ethan Frome. less

This book had a sweet start----it ended okay. The rest of the book was just full of misery.
