review 1: Read to page 112 of 498. Could go no further. Technically didn't "read" it, but it was so dense that I thought I deserved kudos for actually trying. The plot would be riveting - if it were written in any other way. The clichés, the dense writing, the tactical talk! I couldn't stand it. It was painful. I've decided to read something I enjoy - there are too many books in the world to waste time struggling through this. I might pick it up again, but in the very distant future.
review 2: "Le quattro cose ultime", più ancora del suo predecessore, è un libro RIDICOLO, e questo è l'aggettivo più carino che riesco ad esprimere. Se fossi Fantozzi direi che è "una ca*ata pazzesca". E non aggiungo altro.Questa trilogia si basa su un'unica buona idea: i Redentori. Pu... morer essendo modellati su di una religione esistente questa dei Redentori è davvero un'idea buona, ben argomentata, ben descritta. Tutto il resto invece è FUFFA: sono fuffa i nomi geografici presi dalla nostra realtà, sono fuffa i protagonisti, sono fuffa i popoli che ogni tanto fanno capolino nella storia, tutti chiaramente modellati su religioni o etnie veramente esistenti, il tutto in maniera abbastanza razzista e fastidiosa; sono fuffa le descrizioni delle battaglie, che sono particolareggiate fino a metà e poi un bel FF e si va avanti nel tempo, lo sono anche nella descrizione altalenante random, prima sembra che vinca uno schieramento, poi l'altro, poi... bbooohh!Per non parlare della scrittura: caro Paul Hoffman, cos'hai: 17 anni?? Scrivi veramente male, male, male. Non hai uno stile, non hai capacità descrittiva e non sai nemmeno scrivere i dialoghi, ma cosa vuol dire scrivere in terza persona e poi così, a cazzum, rivolgersi direttamente al lettore? Ma sei scemo??Riassumendo in poche parole questo libro ridicolo potrei dire: un'unica idea decente, circondata da un mare di fuffa, scritta da un diciassettenne in crisi ormonale (sesso! spade! sbudellamenti! ormoni! baffi da messicano! randomness!!).Ora io mi chiedo: ma quale casa editrice ha deciso di pubblicare una cosa così? Questi libri sono a livello delle fanfiction shippose che si trovano su internet e il cui livello letterario è pari alla pubblicità della crema per le emorroidi su un giornale di gossip. Chi, chi è quel redattore che ha detto "miracolo! capolavoro! pubblichiamolo!" perchè gli consiglierei vivamente di cambiare lavoro, magari viene a mettere a posto i carrelli al supermercato dove lavoro io...Questo libro è stata una delusione, un totale spreco di tempo e risorse. E meno male che l'ho letto in formato elettronico, almeno non ho contribuito all'abbattimento di alberi per questo scempio.Un ultimo appunto, caro Hoffman: pederastia e omosessualità NON sono la stessa cosa. Informati, imbecille. less

I've got a hard time rating the booka in this series. On the one hand, the story is fast-paced, interesting and full fo twists, but I'm losing my connection with each of the characters as the story progresses. Their actions make less sense, or, worse, I don't really care about what action they take, it feels arbitrary.There is also something int he writing style, where the author sometimes directly addresses the reader with a comment, where I feel that the author isn't taking the reader seriously. If something is so obvious, make sure by the way the story progresses, not by writing, "But I am sure you understand that". Same with certain pieces in parenthesis, and a chapter that ends in a very violent situation that ends with a note to the reader, that he can probably guess what happened next. Either leave the chapter open ended, or and it with very clear intention, or just describe what happens, don't suddenly change the writing style.The other thing that keeps bugging me is the Geography and the lack of proper sense of scale. Travel from the Golan Heights to Switzerland doesn't take a few days march in our world, and no Leeds is located near that location either. It might have been the lack of a map to go with the books or the use of real world location in a fantasy world, but if screws up any sense of scale and time for the reader, making it hard to place the important positions.Other than these issues, I've started apart 3, so there is still enough for me to want to know how it ends. But if someone asks me for a recommendation, there are other titles I'd recommend reading before starting this series.

Follow up from the first amazing book. A tad disappointing, but I can't really put my finger on why. Just sort of looses some of the personality of the main character perhaps. Perhaps it's just suffering from middle-chapter syndrome, like Empire Strikes Back and Matrix Reloaded. If the first book hadn't been so amazing, this wouldn't seem a bit ordinary. Probably, it's worth waiting for the 3rd and reading the 2nd and 3rd together.
