review 1: I have often felt that it is only in the process of describing something that I really come to terms with my understanding of it, which supposedly is my justification for the pointless rants that I have to employ in order to pave a path towards better clarity. How does one completely dissociate oneself from the influence of a story and talk about it in an objective manner is, as a concept, lost on me.A narrative is, to me, not only a sequential revelation of characters and events, rather, a process of active participation in the unfolding of the story- a very real state of my own life. It is true that some books have had no considerable impact on my psyche, not because they were insipid or uninspiring, but that they did not introduce conflicts in my perception of life.It i... mores, therefore, an understatement when I admit that Paul Hoffman depressed me.A lot of stories are bathed in looting, rape, murder, torture and all sorts of abominable inventions that only intelligence can give birth to. However, they are not necessarily the perpetrators of depression. Depression, or emptiness if you will, can be trivially summed up as the loss of hope in one's life. Although dystopia is a horrible and frightening decay of humanity as a society, it but only throws light upon the ongoing struggles of the individuals as well as the people collectively. People who still believe in trust and forgiveness, and love- things that make one human. No such luck with Thomas Cale. There are friendships, true, and nice things that are said and done- but Hoffman could not resist explaining each action taken and somehow amounting everything to self-interest and preservation. Unfortunately, it wasn't necessarily the fact that this is how things were portrayed, but the feeling inside me that they were in some sense very true, that did it for me.Which is the reason I was at times forced to, in the manner of a raving lunatic, try to take in everything at once, and really not taking anything at all. But that, I guess, is the downside of a story without a figment of romance (and if there was any, it was too subtle for me to notice) and Mr. Hoffman will have to be satisfied with whatever meager amount of fanfare that he can wring out of me.Yep, that's it.
