review 1: I'm so very sad. I desperately wanted to love this book and this series. I just couldn't get into it; forcing myself to continue reading, wanting to give it a chance to pick up. Then I realized that there are thousands of books I want to devour and so many more to come, that I can't possibly come close to reading everything on my list, especially if I don't become more ruthless with my decisions to stop reading a book that I'm not thoroughly enjoying. Just disappointed...I was expecting this to be a favorite. Oh well, the search continues...
review 2: Paul Lawrence is a new to me author and Sweet Smell of Decay was lent to me by a friend. I didn't know what to expect. Set in 1664, Harry Lytle a clerk at the Tower of London, receives a odd request from hi
... mores estranged father. To look into the brutal murder of a cousin. A young and beautiful cousin whom was unknown to Harry. Now I am a patient person and know that at times you have to just stick with it until the players are revealed. But the simple matter is there were a lot of players in this novel, I found myself confused more than once, and remained so until the 22nd chapter. (there are 28 chapters) Now you ask. "Why didn't you bail on this book haven't you heard of the 100 page rule or the 150 page rule." Well simply put I found Lawrence's writing compelling enough to stick it out. I could have done less with the descriptions of the smell and muck of London. I get it London was dirty. Did I need to hear repeatedly about how foul peoples breath and body odors were? No! I get it they didn't bath, they had rotten teeth and breath that would kill a skunk. But it is a first novel and like I said I found I like Harry and David Dowling, the big Scots butcher who for some reason is acting a sort of a coroner/investagator/nursemaid. Harry is out of his depth, and I wondered all the way through this why was he asked to investigate this murder? Well I have the second novel and I am going to read that before I form any solid opinion on Paul Lawrence. 2 1/2 stars It was alright and I kind of liked it. less
