review 1: The Rise of Aurora West is a prequel story to Paul Pope's Battling Boy. The focus of this story is Aurora West, the daughter of a two-fisted, rocket pack hero. Aurora West works closely with her father as he trains her to be a monster fighting hero, but at the same time, he is emotionally distant. This story explores why Aurora and her father have dedicated their lives to fighting monsters.I recommend reading this story if you are following the Battling Boy storyline. It provides a lot of motivation for Aurora's actions, so when you see her act in Battling Boy, you can really understand why she is doing it. Also, it adds a lot of depth to her interactions with one of the characters in that story. The only downside is that while this story is co-written by Paul Pope, ... moreit isn't drawn by him. The artist who draws this has a much more cartoony style than Pope, so the art doesn't have the same impact as Pope's. It's not bad, it just takes a bit of time to get accustomed to the change in style.

They discover a plot by monsters to assassinate an unknown target, but while Haggar underestimates monsters and does not see anything bigger at play, Aurora seeks to understand the larger picture. The truth is hidden in her past, buried along with the mystery of the monster who killed her mother. Can she discover the identity of her childhood imaginary best friend all while keeping what she's really up to from her father and master? A great book by Paul Pope with fantastic female characters. Read for good 'ole monster face kicking. less
