review 1: Brilliant book. Nonfiction, but told from Clyde's point of view. Schneider picks you up and takes you away with him on a rollercoaster ride through Texas and the Midwest States and doesn't let you go until the final bloody end. I bought the book on a whim, deciding I wanted to know a bit more about Bonnie and Clyde, and now I'm hooked on the Depression era desperados. My only criticism of the book is that it does leave you with some unanswered questions about what happened to the other gangsters. But Schneider paints a vivid portrait of how desperate those times were, and I put the book down feeling Clyde especially really never stood a chance. It's a rollicking good read.
review 2: My Warren Beatty/Faye Dunaway obsession has been diminihed after finishin... moreg this non-fiction account told mostly in the voice of Clyde. I didn't realize both were tiny people (Bonnie under 5', Clyde 5'4") and that Clyde was nothing but a hot head, trigger finger happy, punk that had no motive in mind when robbing others. While they were able to steal what was probably a year's salary at the time (robberies over $500 divided by the number of accomplises) it wasn't until the end that I realized that they couldn't enjoy the high-life and was limited to "tourist camps" in order to keep from being caught. Toward the end, it was almost as if they were ready to get caught after 18+ months on the run. In reading the book one realizes what limited tools were available for law enforcement (and cruelty too!) and how hard it must've been to catch them without accurate descriptions or radio dispatches. less
