review 1: One of the quotes on the front cover identifies this as "wonderfully strange". Calamity and her 16 sisters are being brought up by Aunty behind a high Wall of Safekeeping, and being trained for a Purpose. Except some of the sisters start to get curious about the other side of the wall. A bit heartbreaking, and quite a lot gripping. Also kind of indescribable, which makes this a pretty rubbish review, but it definitely gave me some stuff to think about, and I was rooting for the characters.
review 2: I'm rather confused by this novel. I really wanted to like it, reading the blurb and the concept I thought that I should. However when it came to reading it I found that it really didn't hold my interest. I don't know if this is down to the writing or to my having o
... morether things to occupy me as I read it. The very fact that it took me about three or four days to read is never a good sign for a book. I found the central concept was interesting, but that it was somewhat smothered by the style. Having Calamity Leek as the narrator should have worked but for whatever reason it failed to do so for me. I didn't feel that the background story came through strongly enough, which was a shame as this was probably the most interesting thing about the novel. It may well be that this is one that I need to come back to at some point, and maybe I will; but for now I am a little disappointed. less

I'm probably not the right demographic, but I'd imagine this would be a big hit with teenage girls.
