review 1: I wanted to like this book more than I actually did. Paulette Jiles is a wonderful writer and I loved her historical fiction titles Enemy Women and The Color of Lightning. Lighthouse Island is set in a dystopian future where the Earth is drastically overpopulated and natural resources including water are in short supply. I liked the main character Nadia, an orphan, who is on a quest to find the mysterious and seemingly magical Lighthouse Island, but I found the story to be very bleak and disjointed.
review 2: Lighthouse Island, a environmental- disaster dystopian novel where everything is controlled by higher powers/agencies, how much water you drink, what you eat, where do you work, what you do, who do you interact with. It set 150 plus years in the future. Na
... moredia, an orphan ( her parent left her of a street, the reasons are discover until 3/4 of the book) will fight(more like lie her way through) having a life where she decides what she wants in her life. On her journey she meets interesting people including James, who helps here with her plan and end up being lovers. The story is well-thought and imaginative. But, I have to say that the story is good but the writing style made it flat and emotionless. It doesn't feel like the characters are talking ( lack of quotations) it just states what the characters says not what they being asks or staff like that. Lighthouse Island didn't do it for me. It just couldn't grab my attention because it keep getting me confuse with when the dialogue ended and where the narration started again. Because of this I couldn't found the characters believable or care for them, it just seem like somebody was telling me a story about it, and wasn't doing a good job. It's an okay book because of the idea. 2.5 Starts less
