review 1: After many many failures with audiobooks I struck gold with this adaptation. Although I am familiar with the original Dream of the Red Chamber, I have read only portions in the original language and translated into English. Chen's adaptation is anything but watered down, but is very moving and does truly capture an essence that I found cumbersome and slightly academic in the original. I plan on reading the original very soon (which for me means in the next couple of years.)
review 2: I did not like that this was written in the present tense. "She crosses the room and picks up her shoes..." as opped to "she crossed the room and picked up her shoes..." I found that annoying. Aside from that though, this book was a wonderful read. I giggled and cried, and the endi
... moreng was not what I expected or hoped for, which is always refreshing, even when you don't get the exact outcome you want. All in all, a good read and I reccomend it. less
