review 1: Having read "Dream of the Red Chamber", for me this novel gave a little more insight into female navigation of proper etiquette and in-house survival, but it was fairly predictable to decipher which character was a re-imagination of the original. I did enjoy the fact that the author adjusted the ultimate endings for some characters. My favorite character was Xifeng, though I don't believe Chen destined her to be a favorite. She was the most realistic and heartwarming character for me, and I could empathize with her easily.
review 2: It was a good read. Although some parts were extremely boring and seemed to go nowhere, there were many parts that were a page turner. A very sad book. My heart broke for many of the characters. As some have said, it is very "soap o... morepera" like and has much scandal and conflicts between characters that carries on until the end of the book. I liked the book. It was not a waste of time at all and I was actually surprised by the ending. Nothing cliche about it. I would reccommend. less
