review 1: Having read "Dream of the Red Chamber", for me this novel gave a little more insight into female navigation of proper etiquette and in-house survival, but it was fairly predictable to decipher which character was a re-imagination of the original. I did enjoy the fact that the author adjusted the ultimate endings for some characters. My favorite character was Xifeng, though I don't believe Chen destined her to be a favorite. She was the most realistic and heartwarming character for me, and I could empathize with her easily.
review 2: It was a good read. Although some parts were extremely boring and seemed to go nowhere, there were many parts that were a page turner. A very sad book. My heart broke for many of the characters. As some have said, it is very "soap o
... morepera" like and has much scandal and conflicts between characters that carries on until the end of the book. I liked the book. It was not a waste of time at all and I was actually surprised by the ending. Nothing cliche about it. I would reccommend. less
