review 1: I enjoyed this book so much I bought a hard copy (originally Nooked it). I had never read anything by Peter Cameron, but this was a surprise and made me want to read more of his stuff. It starts out as a traditional gothic type mystery with a young unknown being rescued by the owner of a huge country house, saving both of them; But it doesn't quite end up that way, thankfully. It was a nice departure from the traditional formula. Set in the present day, there are many twists and turns to create the suspense and mystery needed to enjoy the read.
review 2: A craftsman-like novel, which is not faint praise. Cameron's story of a terminal care nurse who comes to marry the son of her most recent charge, is a tender tale of fraught and hesitant love between broken pe
... moreople. Clement Hart (yes, the names are occasionally symbolic) is the wounded veteran who comes to see Coral Glynn as his last, best chance for love. Around this couple Cameron deploys Hart's friends, Robin and Dolly Lofting and assorted other locals. There is also the precipitating incident of a murdered child whom Coral has actually encountered (alive) on her rambles away from Hart House. The story is deftly told, with lightly deployed literary touches that heighten the significance of the action from time to time. It really feels like a master class in fine storytelling. There are very few feet put wrong (Dolly's motives and character seem to shift unaccountably over time, Inspector Hoke seems a mite too gullible) and this small, occasionally resonant love story is capably and deftly told. less

The only real descriptive word to describe this book is odd. Not bad, just weird.

Very moving, beautiful and compassionate characterizations. Hard to put down.

Beautiful, haunting, formal. But also quirky in that Ishiguro sort of way.

I enjoyed it until the end. Disappointing.
