review 1: I like the idea of a woman reading about the origin of a clockwork swan while reconstructing it for a museum. I like how self absorbed the characters are and the constant shifting between centuries. However, I feel this book was trying to say something really deep and important which I just couldn't grasp. Something to do with devils and knowledge and science.. don't know if was the book that didn't explain well enough or whether it was just beyond my comprehension.
review 2: I wanted so much to love this book. I'm a huge fan of some of Carey's other novels, so maybe my expectations were too high. I couldn't connect to the Henry Brandling story at all. The two narratives were disjointed and I didn't find any chemistry between them, or in Carey's language, not t
... morehe way I usually do. I put it down for several weeks in the middle, in denial about my disappointment. I felt drawn in enough to give it three stars, but if I could give half stars would probably give it 2.5. Sad! But definitely not giving up on Carey. Moving on to Theft or Jack Maggs next. less
