review 1: (audiobook edition) I'll cut right to the chase - the big surprise in this book is the author's journalistic experiences with and historical knowledge of the USSR. He spends a great deal of time in the book on this "atheist society experiment" (like how America has been called the opposite) and that makes his book compelling and unique. Looking back, there's no way to sugar-coat it - the great atheistic society known as Soviet Russia was horrible. It is a very compelling argument against atheism and toward theism, specifically Christianity. In regards to the audiobook edition, it is read by the author. Sounds like a good idea, but unfortunately Peter Hitchens voice is a very deep, guttural English voice with lots of heavy breathing. Sounds like he ate Thanksgiving dinner an... mored is now trying to read a book while bending over. Also they used a gate when recording his voice (which mutes the volume when no sound is detected). This gate effect makes it sound like he is stuttering or stammering. It can be distracting. And I may be looking to into it, but near the end his voice just sounds like the faith he defends has already been defeated. Has an air of sadness to it.In short - good book, but I would suggest reading it rather than listening to it.
review 2: Loved this book. I would have like more of his own personal bio as to really how he came to faith, and how things have been in his life since then. There were hints of it, but the book focuses more on the history of countries in which faith in God has been completely squelched -- such as in communist Russia/Soviet Union, North Korea, and some of the African countries. The scariest part was how Britain and the US are moving in that direction as well. less

The first half of the book should be a separate book named, "Why I became a conservative."
