review 1: While I do not know if I will change my introverted ways because of this book, it has a powerful message. The author seeks to know his neighbors, and, much to the chagrin of his children, tries to accomplish this by sleeping over at their houses. One home and one or two neighbors at a time, he works to build a community out of a neighborhood of self-contained homes. Perhaps my favorite story is not about his neighbors at all, but about their letter carrier who knows more about them than they know about one another.
review 2: This book did a wonderful job of making me think about what a neighborhood is (current reality), what a neighborhood could be (surrogate family), and what can be done to bring a neighborhood together to become a strong community. Lovenheim... more has inspired me to check with my property management at my apartment and see if they host any apartment community events to help neighbors get to know each other face-to-face (doubtful, since there's no apparent clubhouse) and see if there's anything that could be done on my part to perhaps facilitate such options (once nicer weather comes, of course, because nobody enjoys being out in freezing, rainy, dreary weather conditions). Despite a few technical things that bugged me (randomly dropping small tid-bits of information in an, "Oh, by the way!" fashion and sentences that occasionally seem terribly disjointed chronologically), this is a book everybody should read. less
