review 1: I gave the book 4 stars but I will not read it again. I think this book made me realize what a 4-star rating is: a book which I enjoyed *at the moment* a book I have nothing negative to say about, but one that I will not spend the same amount of energy and time to re-read.This book is more neutral / grey / monotonous than I expected it to be. I can say its the story of a couple from their student days in Munich studying architecture to their middle-age life and the changes in-between. It doesn't sound exciting but there is exciting in the book in terms of plot twists. One keeps reading it because of light touches of light and shadow that fall on the characters and these touches make reading the book a pleasurable experience. There are super protagonists no truths to be reve... morealed no intervention from fate, just the linear progress of two people. There is more of course, but I would be revealing spoilers...
review 2: OK - I'd like to know what that was all about so if anyone has it figured out, please let me know? There must have been more going on than the surface narrative, right? My best guess was that the two women were supposed to be representative of the East and the West and the narrator was representative of Germany being pulled back and forth by his desires and his ambitions? The novel has a strange dreamlike quality and the writing is clean but has a strange distance to it. But if anyone has figured out what was supposed to be represented in this odd, indulgent story then please share. less
