review 1: Written in the first person, the main character is this sullen / depressed guy who marries the perfect woman but doesn't love her and has an affair over the years with another woman that he never really said anything to. I kept expecting this book to get better but it didn't. He needed counseling. He and his wife needed counseling. He never vented to his friends about how he was feeling. And for those reasons, I didn't like this book -- unless the book is about opportunities lost. I would be interested in knowing what my literary friends think of this book, because maybe this book is awesome and I totally missed the point.
review 2: Was this badly written or a bad translation? It wasn't just a stylistic turn. It just often sounded incomplete, stilted.Otherwis
... moree, it was easy reading. Simple vocabulary, simple sentences.Every character seems superficial, concerned with appearances, cold, unfeeling. Except for the one who is a lump of coal (some sort of autism?), but who seems to have a heart (or is it just that she built a story in her head, and she doesn't deviate from it even when confronted over and over with a different reality?)There were interesting points, but the narrator was such a despicable person that I was more annoyed than enthralled. less

Eh, not really into this one. It had its moments, but overall, wasn't my cup of tea.

Three and a half stars. Very, very good. Not quite great, but awfully close.
