review 1: This is a book I will remember and it will be one of my favorites of the year. I enjoyed the intertwining of two stories: that of the current generation and owners of the ranch and the story of their ancestor. Each story had its own feeling. The way the past affected the present was fascinating. The author did not skimp on the ruthlessness of the drug cartels and other criminals....scary. I've read reviews by people who live in that area and they say it is very factual.
review 2: This started out really enticing me, but kind of fell apart for me. I had to check it out from the library three times to get through it. The main character, all sad and suicidal over his wife's death, radically falls in love with another woman, and it just didn't float with me. One
... more of the other starring characters, well, I simply couldn't care less about her. Actually, by about half way through, I didn't like any of the characters but one, and she was undeveloped, then killed off. The story fluctuates between modern times, and the old west, and I really did enjoy the old west parts. Those characters were quite interesting, and the stories they told were captivating. But not enough to raise my stars to more than a 2.5. The rest of it was too boring. less
